Wake County Highpoint Trip Report
three unnamed areas (540+ feet)
Date: June 3, 2006
Author: Fred Lobdell
Andy Martin's book lists four areas for Wake County but one of these has fallen
victim to progress. I will cover these areas in the same order in which I
listed them in my original 1999 report.
The first, southernmost area is unchanged.
It is the second area that has disappeared. What used to be an open field is
now a shopping center. We went to the geographic coordinates that Mike had put
into his GPS unit and found ourselves in front of the center stores in the
shopping center. A short distance north the new I-540, not shown on the topo,
has been built.
The third area, just north of the Hickory Grove Church, now has a fence through
part of the area. However, the high ground is still in the woods behind some
houses and is unencumbered by fence.
The fourth area is still at the end of a cul-de-sac. Another development has
been put in behind the one on the cul-de-sac. The high ground appears to be in
the back yard or in woods between the two sets of houses. If access is blocked
at the cul-de-sac it may be possible to access the area from the other development,
although permission would be required.
