Sheridan County High Point Trip Report

Morton Hill

Date: June 10, 2000
Author: John Mitchler

This significant hill is a typical western NE sand hill and is open grassland and requires a hike of a mile with over 300' of gain. From the junction of US382 & NE2 at Alliance, go 33 miles east on NE2 to NE27. Turn left (north) and go 16.5 miles to a point where the road is at its highest as it goes over the eastern edge of Morton Hill. This is just north of Highland Flats. The Hamilton Ranch is at the bottom of Morton Hill. From the highway, strike out on foot up the hill. The ridge is very hummocky so some elevation gain/loss is inevitable, especially if you travel as the crow flies. Try to stay right (north) and stay high around a sink (which lies on the ridge top). Then continue on to the HP which is an obvious hill on top of Morton Hill. The entire ridge drops off significantly to the west. The highpoint hill has two knobs on it (grass covered sand) of which the northern one is the highest. Lots of birds here.
