From the US 3/NH 11 bypass, east of Laconia, take NH 11A east about two miles to the village of Gilford.
Turn right (south) onto Belknap Mountain Road, which bears left at 0.8 miles, and right at 1.3 miles, with
no name change. Turn left at 2.4 miles onto the Belknap Carriage Road, which is gated about 1/4 mile uphill.
The gate is opened by the fire lookout from 9 AM to 6 PM. In bad weather, it may be closed earlier
if all cars are gone from the upper parking lot. It is not plowed past the gate in winter. The road turns to
dirt, and reaches a large parking area 1.5 miles uphill. The road ends only 100 feet beyond, at the fire
warden's garage, and from there you have a choice of three trails to the summit -- Green (0.7 miles one
way), White (1/10 mile longer), or Blue (about 1.25 each way). I used the Green, which was steep but quite
serviceable. Gain - 700'. If the fire tower is open, visit the lookout, who welcomes visitors, and sign the register.
Wonderful view of almost all of Lake Winnipesaukee from the tower.
