De Baca County High Point Trip Report
Loma Alta (5,583 ft)
Date: March 15, 2000
Author: Scott Surgent
Drove south and met up with US-60. Passed through Fort Sumner and very large grassland fire.
From Fort Sumner, drive 31 miles west on US-60 to near milepost 293. Turn south onto
excellent dirt road ("Perez Ranch"). Drive for 1.5 miles to a large triangle intersection.
Turn right (west) onto a secondary dirt road that is fairly decent.
Pass railroad tracks at 1 mile and drive another mile or so to base of Loma Alta.
Park and hike up the mesa, a 150 foot gain. The benchmark is on the west edge of the mesa.
A dirt road does lead to the top. I did find the road after the railroad tracks a bit soft
and sandy. Very pleasant hike.
