John Mitchler's write-up worked best for me here. However, the driving route has been made easier. At 1.6 miles from the end of FR540, where John had me looking for a pile of rocks, the Forest Service has now installed a road sign. The jeep road you want, to the right, is now signed "North McKittrick Canyon".

On the hike to the summit, I contoured around the left (east) side of point 7139. I don't recommend it as better than the routes already described, but it does go reasonably well.
