Harding County High Point Trip Report
Sugarloaf Mountain (6,455 ft)
Date: March 15, 2000
Author: Scott Surgent
From I-25 in Springer, take US-54 for 35 miles east to "town" of Gladstone.
Turn south onto Union County Road 1, a good dirt road. Follow for about 5 miles as it heads
south, west, then southwest, then west again, turning into Colfax County Road 37 at a
cattle grate. Drive another mile along CR-37 and park when Sugarloaf's peak comes into view.
Hike south toward a lone tree (probably dead). A fence comes into view. Follow southerly
fence line, hopping an E-W fence (carefully) along the way, achieving a ridge at which time
Sugarloaf comes into view about 0.25 miles distant. Hike by line of sight to the summit.
Excellent views! The Sangre De Cristo Mountains to the west were readily visible.
The hike is exactly 4 miles round-trip, about a 400 foot gain. Took me exactly 1 hour.
