Rensselaer County Highpoint Trip Report
Berlin Mtn (2,818 ft)
Date: January 7, 2007

I followed Dan Case's excellent report and everything was as he had reported.
The trail seems to be blazed a bit better beyond Berlin Pass but the trail is 15
feet wide and eroded, so it's hard to miss. This would have been a stellar hike
but ATVs (bringing obese rednecks to the backcountry since 1930) had destroyed
the trail and created a muddy, eroded mess all of the way to the summit.
There were signs banning motor vehicles but they seem to be duly ignored, as the
tracks were quite fresh. On the return, I took the red blazed trail to the
summit of Mount Raimer and then followed said trail down to Petersburg Pass.
Round trip was 5.0 miles with about 1,000 feet of gain with 1 hour up and 50
minutes down including the ascent of Raimer.
