The high spots at this site appear to be the berms along the sides of US 30 within 0.75 mile of the
Indiana-Ohio state line. While these berms appear to be man-made, a result of trenches dug for drainage along the
highway; at least two areas appear to be genuine and their surface contours are consistent with the
surrounding fields.
The first area is along the south side of the highway, about 600-800 feet east of the Indiana-Ohio line. Park
on the side road which goes off from Route 30 at the state line, and hike along the berm until you reach the
highest area near "ground hog city" where the local marmot population resides.
The second area is about 0.75 mile east of the state line, along the west-bound side of the divided highway.
While the second area parallels the road for roughly 0.5 mile, it appears that the highest spot is near an old
deteriorated barn. Pull off the highway at the barn, and stroll up and down on the edge of the field/berm.
Using my GPS and altimeter, I obtained relative elevation differences which suggested that the area near the
old barn is several feet higher than the more westerly "ground hog" area. Visit both areas and decide for yourself.
