Wyandot County High Point Trip Report

From the intersection of US 23 and Route 231, drive north on Route 231 for about 3.25 miles. As you
approach the center of the tiny town of Wyandot, watch for the Family of Love Church and a septic tank
storage yard on the right.
Area 1 is a narrow contour that parallels the road just south of the main intersection in town.
I think the highest spot in this area is in the yard of a blue house on the west side of the road.
When you arrive at the main intersection (where Routes 231 and 294 both turn sharply to the west) continue
going north a short distance (on a driveway) to a light grey house and the site of area 2. The house is
owned by Jim Jury, who I found to be friendly and helpful.
From the main intersection in the center of town, follow Route 231 northwest for 0.65 mile to an
intersection where Route 294 continues west and Route 231 turns north. Pull off and park near a white barn
which is just west of this intersection, and hike northwest into the bean field. Three separate contours
(areas 3-5) can be found here, arching to the north. The southern and northern areas are prominent, but the middle
area is not very distinct.
From the intersection of routes 294 and 231, drive north on Route 231 for 2.2 miles. Watch for a prominent
wooded rise in the field to the west (area 6). Park along the road and hike west across the cornfield, or walk
along the edge of a mowed property line (posted) to the woods. A path goes into the woods a short
distance and forks: the right side goes to a shed, and the left side goes up a short rise to the highpoint.
Jim Jury told me that this spot used to be the clear highpoint in the county many years ago, but it was mined
for gravel and subsequently lowered over the years. Today the trees growing here are quite large, but the
abrupt and erratic pattern of several mounds in the woods seem to confirm Mr Jury's claim.
