Kingfisher County High Point Trip Report

two points on Porcupine Butte quadrangle

Date: August 26, 2001

This one gave me some trouble. I first tried from the East taking Oklahoma Avenue (E0890) west from US-81 in Okarche but it dead ended a little beyond the Porcupine Buttes.

I backtracked and took US-81 south, E0890 west, Frisco Road south and E0900 west to Gregory Road, then north on Gregory and hit a locked gate, still far away from the area I wanted.

Third time's a charm? Again, backtracking, I drove North of Okarche to Road E0850 signed to Altoona. Go west. In Altoona, zero odometer and continue west 1.0 mile to Road N2700 and go south at 3.0 miles to (I believe) Road E0870. Continue straight ahead (south) to 3.5 miles at a fork. Go left to about 3.8 miles where it dead ends and park.

Start hiking southeast, drop a little then gain 100 ft to a plateau in 0.2 mile. Follow the plateau south- southwest, bypassing a bump in 0.3 mile to a saddle. Then go southwest 0.2 mile and pick up a track. Follow it southwest about 0.4 mile, through some trees to the high point area. Quarter the area to get the two bumps.

The round-trip was only a little over 2 miles but I was fighting darkness before getting back to my car.
