Baker County High Point Trip Report
Red Mtn (9,560+ ft)
Date: September 1999
Author: Ken Jones
This peak is a long day or reasonable overnight scramble in the southern
Wallowa mountains. It is much less crowded than the northern section of the
range.
From Oregon route 86 between Richland and Halfway, take Forest Road 77 to
McBride Campground, where FR 7715 branches north. Follow FR 7715 to its end
at the Summit Point trailhead.
Hike north on trail 1885 toward Crater Lake (yes, Oregon has more than one
Crater Lake). Where the trail starts dropping toward the lake, about 7
miles from the car, turn east toward the base of the mountain. After
leaving the trees, scramble up and left, reaching the ridge south of Red
Mtn. at about 9,200'. From here, walk the ridge (with a few scrambling
spots) to the summit and register.
Estimated round-trip: 17 miles, 4,000' gain
