Crook County High Point Trip Report
Lookout Mtn (6,926 ft)
Date: August 1997
Author: Ken Jones
A popular bump on a ridge in central Oregon. Many mountain bikers in the
area when we were there.
From Hwy 26 east of Ochoco Reservoir, take Ochoco Creek Road (FR 23) to FR
42. Turn right, and follow this paved road to a saddle, and the junction of
FR 4205. Turn right, and proceed to the trailhead at the end of the road
(which is before the Independent Mine - the road is closed at about 5800').
There are a number of trails in the area not shown on the map. The one we
took followed the old road, then went above it. Use your navigation skills.
Once you're on the ridge at about 6500' there are some forks - we made a
loop using two of the trails. At the summit, the spot labeled 6926 is
probably highest, but go north and get the next closed contour as well. The
two north of that are definitely lower. About 1000' gain and 3 miles RT.
