Union County High Point Trip Report
Eagle Cap (9,572 ft)
Date: September 1998
Author: Ken Jones
A beautiful, popular peak in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, overlooking the
popular Lakes Basin. A well-worn trail leads to the summit.
From Lostine, Oregon, head south on the Lostine Canyon Road (county route
551, becomes forest route 8210). Wave when you pass the Lostine Guard Station at
about 5000' elevation; I spent the summer living and working there in
1978. Continue to the end of the road and the parking area at Two Pan.
Prepared either for a long day or for an overnight trip, head up the trail.
It forks soon; keep left for the East Fork (Lostine River) trail. This
reaches a junction on the shore of Mirror Lake at 7.3 miles; turn right. In
a short distance (a couple of hundred yards) turn left on the Horton
Pass/Eagle Cap trail. After a series of switchbacks the Eagle Cap trail
forks left. Follow it to the summit. In the summer you're not likely to be
alone.
Round trip is about 20 miles and 4000' gain.
