Carbon County Highpoint Trip Report
Date: November 7, 2006
Author: Cliff Young
The road in previous trip reports as posted to prohibit unauthorized vehicular
traffic was now heavily posted against any sort of travel. No hiking, biking,
hunting, fishing or trespassing for any reason, among other warnings.
There was at least half a dozen signs, one about 2 feet by three feet.
Crawling wasn't specifically prohibited but I decided to seek other routes.
Driving in to the ski area I found that it is within a guarded community
although, if they want to keep me out, they need to put a guard in the booth.
Seeing no one, I drove in to the ski area parking lot and parked with about
twenty other cars in the lot. I walked up under the lifts to the left (east) of
the lodge having seen no signs restricting access. It was a steep haul up the
lift line to the top. There is a short trail through the woods to the road and
the highpoint rocks are reached just a few hundred feet to the right (west).
The rocks are a fun little scramble and leave no doubt as to the actual highpoint.
I got a reading of 2208 feet on top of the rocks which was a bit higher
than the topo would indicate.
There was a sign in a tree along the trail back to the ski lift which warned
against trespassing but it was very old and tattered completely unreadable,
even the part about a 2,500 dollar fine and 90 days imprisonment.
