Chester County High Point Trip Report
Welsh Mountain (1080+ ft)
Date: March 15, 2000

Just north of the county line on PA 10, take Welsh Road east. After 0.1 miles, bear left onto gravel road
signed for Morgantown Rod and Gun. Take to quarry entrance and park opposite gated dirt road on left
also signed for the Rod and Gun.
Walk up dirt road to flat crest and shooting range. (If range is in use, a
bushwhack would be required to avoid the range.) Walk east to the end of the range and bushwhack to a
point overlooking the quarry. From here you can see across the diggings to the high point, about a half
mile away. The quarry is dug right up to the edge of the high point, but due to private homes below, the
high point ridge is still intact. From here, drop down into the woods to bypass the quarry. The
bushwhacking is miserable, featuring laurel thickets, thorn bushes, rock dust on foliage and airborne, and
also requires sneaking between private homes and the quarry.
Eventually drop down downhill quite a way
to bypass a spoil pile, then climb steeply on the far side of the pile to the high point, the intact ridge crest.
I bushwhacked at least another half mile further east, and am confident that the point near the spoil pile is
the highest ground. Since the ridge top has not been disturbed, and based on its position, I believe it is the
original high point. Remnants of old trails and jeep roads help the bushwhacking in places. One
substantial trail led sharply downhill, and may end up in the trailer camp below. This is a classic example
of eastern highpointing at its worst.
