Chestnut Ridge
From Exit 120 on I-80, go north on PA 879 a few miles to the post office in Shawsville.
From there follow the distances and turns in Mike Schwartz's report,
paying little attention to road names. As I didn't re-read Bill Schuler's
and Charlie Zerphey's reports until after I did this one (duh!)
I wasn't aware of the fence until I got to the area.
I didn't find Charlie's people gate but the main gate itself was closed only
with a hasp and was not locked. It was an easy matter to open the gate
and walk to the summit.
south of Bloom Road
Exit 18 on I-80 is now Exit 111. I found Bloom Road to be heavily rutted
but navigable with care in a passenger car. In wet weather I would have had
to leave my car out on Greenwood Road and walk the short additional distance
up Bloom Road. I parked where Mike said to and started walking up this grassy road.
The bushwhack to the summit looked unappetizing, so I applied logic to the situation.
If there is a tower on the summit, there must be an access road somewhere.
I walked back toward Greenwood Road and walked up another gated grassy road
all the way to the summit.
I saw a chestnut-sided warbler on this hike. So, slightly revised directions:
After turning into Bloom Road, park at the first grassy road on the right (south),
which is about a tenth of a mile up Bloom Road. Walk this road to the summit.
