Columbia County High Point Trip Report
northeast corner of county (2420 ft)

From the junction with PA 118, take PA 487 north 2.2 miles to a gated dirt road on the left. There's
another entrance to the same dirt road 100' further uphill. If either gate is open, the road is driveable 0.7
miles to the summit. There is a fenced-in lookout at the summit. A trail leads roughly west from the
tower, then forks right and downhill to the state game lands boundary markers which are probably at or
very near the county line and the county high point. The tower was manned this day, and the forester
advised me that the remaining PA fire towers are all in the east. The western towers were removed in
favor of aerial surveillance, but a forester must be on board the aircraft, and few of them are willing or
able to fly. So the fire reporting in western PA now mostly relies on citizen reports.
