spot elevation 1 mile north of Williamstown (1771 ft)
Off SR 1002 in Williamstown (Market Street), take Ray Street, which becomes Colliery Road, 0.9 miles.
Make sharp right turn onto coal-black dirt road, and work uphill, staying on the black dirt road. Pass
through lockable gate at1.3 miles, and continue uphill to 1.5 miles. Park at a pullout opposite a yellow-
blazed jeep road angling steeply uphill. There is an active coal mine further up the black dirt road, and if
you are nervous about the locked gate, parking below it does not cost too much in distance or gain. Hike
the yellow-blazed road until it crests, then bushwhack straight up the mountain to the ridge top. Check
your position relative to the town below to ensure dropping off the ridge at the correct point on the return.
Gain the ridge top east of the summit and bushwhack a little over 1/2 mile west, passing over a barely
perceptible intermediate knob. There is a definite final climb to the summit knob.
spot elevation on Broad Mountain, 1/4 mile south of Wolf Pond (1763 ft)
At traffic light in Lykens, off US 209, turn south onto SR 4013 (Market St.). Route bears left after a few
blocks and goes 2.0 miles to right turn onto unsigned Lykens Road. Bear right at 5.2 miles onto White
Oak Road. The road crests at 6.2 miles, then drops steeply to a junction at 6.4 miles with Wolf Pond
Road. Go left on Wolf Pond to dead end at 8.8 miles. Hike south to far end of field then strike SE into
the woods. Ground starts to slope up very soon and climbs through laurel to a high point. Compass
imperative in summer.
Note: Alternate access route--From PA 325 take Carsonville Rd to right at Back Road to left onto White
Oak Road, to junction with Wolf Pond Road. Distance from 325 to Wolf Pond Road junction--8.8 miles.
