Fayette County High Point Trip Report
Date: December 2001
Author: Levi Foust
Note: During 7-Springs Resort's ski season (usually December - March) this route is definitely out of the
question (unless hiking the last segment). It uses service roads which cross and follow ski slopes.
Michael Schwartz's trip report avoids this obstacle, but Pritts Distillery Road may be impassable in a regular
passenger car if there has been recent snowfall of large amount.
Starting Point(s):
(1) If coming from Westmoreland County's highpoint, continue south on Fire Tower
Road from green gate for 0.9 mile to its intersection with the paved road. Turn right onto the paved road,
and go about 100 yards to the first dirt road on the left.
(2) If coming from the west, following Michael
Schwartz's trip report for Westmoreland or Fayette Counties. Go just beyond the Westmoreland/Somerset
County border, turning right onto the dirt road just before cresting the hill. Take this dirt road for 0.7 mile
to its intersection with a paved road. Turn left and go up the hill 0.25 mile through the ticket booths.
Veer to the right and far side of the parking lot and follow signs for Tahoe Lodge (only another 0.5 mile).
Reaching Tahoe Lodge, make the last possible right onto a dirt service road which will round up to the highpoint.
The highpoint is on or at a clump of boulders which may or may not be naturally placed.
Another point of interest is Westmoreland Coutnty's highpoint, just a few minute's drive away.
