Forest County Highpoint Trip Report
three unnamed areas (1,940+ ft)
Date: June 8, 2008
Author: Fred Lobdell
area northwest of Pine Camp
Follow Mike Schwartz's directions to get to the trailhead.
Coming from Elk County, the dirt road you want is the second one you come
to on your left (south). Walk up the dirt road for a half mile or so until
you see a left fork. (There is an earlier left fork only a couple of
hundred feet south of the locked gate.) Take this second fork,
which leads to a large open area that has been clear-cut and excavated.
Walk across the open area to the east side.
The non-obvious high ground is just a relatively short bushwhack into the woods.
Going this way will save you the hike up to and along the pipeline as well as
a somewhat longer bushwhack. Total savings should be at least 20 minutes and perhaps more.
area southwest of Pine Camp
The road passes through the high contour. The high ground appears to be just
a short bushwhack into the woods on the west side of the road.
area northwest of Pine Camp
Follow Mike's directions for this hike. While whacking the bushes toward the
high ground, I flushed a ruffed grouse (Pennsylvania's state bird) and about a dozen chicks.
As I was driving out of this area toward PA 66, I encountered two stopped vehicles,
one on each side of a tree that was down across the road.
I got out of my car and one of the men asked if I had a chain saw.
I said, "I've got a pocket knife with a one-and-a-half-inch blade."
He responded, "I don't think we want to work that hard."
The man on the far side had a length of chain that he attached to the front bumper
of his pick-up and he managed to get the tree enough off the road that vehicles could pass.
