Huntingdon County Highpoint Trip Report

one area at Big Flat (2,400+ ft)

The approach from Bear Meadows Road (intersection with North Meadows Road) is now gated about 2.5 miles shy of the crest. I tried approaching by circling clockwise to no avail, since the southeastern approach (Wampler/Gettes Ridge) is also gated about 2 miles from the site. I eventually ended up at the gate at the intersection of Bear Gap Road and Gettes Ridge Road, just 0.3 mile west of the HP area.

Go south from Route 322 for 1.4 miles on Bear Meadows Road to a right turn onto Bear Gap Road. This good dirt road has an interesting double-back hairpin turn about 0.5 mile up the mountain (1.9 cumulative miles). After cresting, the road descends down Laurel Run but Bear Gap Road goes off to the left at the 5.0 mile mark. Go left and head south on Bear Gap Road as it ascends steeply for another 1.5 miles.

At the 6.5 mile mark (cumulative), park at the yellow and black gate at the intersection with Gettes Ridge Road and hike about 0.3 mile east to where the road crests the contour. You can wander in the laurel tangles until you're satisfied that the highest ground has been found.
