McKean County High Point Trip Report

on county line 2 miles southwest of Shaytown (2,460+ ft)

Date: April 13, 2000

From US 6 in Port Allegany, take Mill Street northeast at the Sheetz station. This ascends a lovely valley, and ends at 6.6 miles at a T-intersection shown on the topo at BM 2343. Just downhill from the T, a gated grassy game road heads left (east). Hike this road, which dips, then climbs the west shoulder of the high point knob. When it levels off, bushwhack straight up the hill. Surveyors blazes on top appear to mark the county line, and a white painted metal post is just about in the right spot to mark the high point.

Alternate approach: From PA 44 at the hamlet of Myrtle, so south on SR1009. Fork right at 5.0 miles onto SR 4045. Keep right at fork at 6.2 miles onto SR 1001. Reach T-intersection (Annin Creek Road) at 7.5 miles, and go left. Continue over a steep crest, and just below crest find the intersection and game road described in the Port Allegany approach.
