I found Mike Schwartz's and Chip Clark's trip reports together to be quite helpful.
I followed Chip's advice about parking further up the road from the
Indian Trail trailhead but there is a pullout large enough to accommodate one
car right at the sign.
As Chip noted, the Indian Trail is badly in need of maintenance.
I agree with both report authors that the Mid-State Trail, not shown on the topo,
passes closer to the summit than the trail shown on the topo.
It may well be that when the Mid-State Trail was put through, that portion
of the trail was relocated.
In fact, I think it may well pass through the highest contour on its eastern edge.
I don't know how old the Mid-State is, but my 1993 edition of the
Pennsylvania hiking guidebook mentions it.
The topo also shows the Indian Trail coming in from the north. On that side,
the distance is about the same as from the south side but the trailhead is more
than 300 feet higher and the trail appears much less steep. As a suggestion for
the next cohper doing this HP, it might be worth your while to investigate this approach.
