Montour County High Point Trip Report
2 points on Montour Ridge (1,380+ ft)
Date: April 2, 2000
Author: Michael Schwartz
The multiple towers on the summit are clearly visible from I-80. From PA 642, go south on Church Road
through Mooresburg. At the crossroads after 0.2 miles, road is signed Bald Top Road. Continue up onto
the mountain to the 1.8 mile point, and a right turn onto a dirt road signed "state game lands 1." I was
able to go 0.7 miles to a locked gate. At 0.5 miles, bear left onto the grey stone road for the last 0.2.
There is a large parking area at the top. Hike up the grey stone road, which ascends the ridge line on the
south side. See the tower after a few minutes. Follow the road past its crest (you may see the towers on
the right) until it clearly starts descending. Bushwhack to the crest, and follow the crest east, back to the
towers and the benchmark. This ensures passing over the high points west of the towers. The drop-off
from the westernmost high point is barely discernible, but the rise to spot elevation 1388 is obvious. The
benchmark is on a concrete base among the cluster of boulders at the high point near one of the radio
towers. To descend from the summit, look for a grassy path descending in the right direction. This
shortcuts down to the grey stone road.
Note: Access via the dirt road shown on the topo that approaches from the north side of the crest was
blocked by private property, gates, dogs, etc. The road's terminus on top is visible at the towers. Round
trip, with bushwhacking, took 1 hour 20 minutes.
