Wayne County Highpoint Trip Report
three areas (including spot elevation 2,656) on Mt Ararat (2,640+ ft)
Date: June 27, 2004
Author: Bob Schwab
This is an update to Mike Schwartz's earlier report. The highest portion of Mount Ararat has been cleared
of trees and brush and there is now an access road from the southeast. It appears they're planning to
establish a wind farm or something up there. I discovered this approach after bushwhacking up the
northeast side of the mountain.
From the PA 370/PA 670 intersection in Orson, drive south about 1.8 miles. Watch for a red gate on the
right (west) and park here (no postings). Walk up this road, which is quite well-constructed in places, as it
meanders up the southeast side of Mount Ararat. Eventually it tops out at the spot elevation site (2,656 ft)
where there are two boulders nearby. From here, hike north across the scalped summit to the woods.
As you approach the woods, note the cleared pathway that continues north on the left (west) side of the wooded area.
Follow this pathway to its end, which stops fifty feet shy of the fence that Mike refers to in his report.
Cross the fence and find the two northern bumps in the semi-grazed woodlands north of the fence.
