600 ft north of former Ricketts fire tower (2,380+ ft)
Take PA 487 north 4.4 miles from the Sullivan/Luzerne County line to a large "Welcome to Pennsylvania
Game Lands" sign. Turn into the gravel road, signed 200 feet in as Mountain Springs Road. Go 1.9
miles to Opperman Pass. Hike up gated dirt road to the hilltop. Two private bungalows at the NW end of
the hilltop and downhill from the summit should be very close to the Wyoming County line and the high point.
2 points on Bartlett Mtn 1 3/4 miles south of Loveton (2,380+ ft)
Take PA 87 east 1.7 miles from the Wyoming/Sullivan County line to the junction with PA 187. Go south (right)
on Catlin Hollow Road to the 2.4 mile point. This area is heavily posted with some particularly
threatening signs, but once you enter the woods, you're not likely to have company. Park between a small
ranch-style house and a flat-roofed stucco house. The trail, more of a jeep road, actually begins at the
stucco house and contours downhill parallel to the road, then heads uphill. Enter the woods between the
two houses and search for the trail. It's well worth the time, to avoid a tough bushwhack all the way up
the mountain, one of only two in PA with more than 1000' of gain via the easiest route. Once the trail
starts to level off significantly near the crest, it makes a sharp right turn and starts to descend slightly.
From this point, bushwhack to the crest. En route reach a cliff outcrop. Climb this and then ramp up on
mostly flat rocks to the highest ground, still a few hundred yards away. The first high point reached is the
more westerly of the two. From here drop down and compass march due east to the easterly high point.
Retrace the route to find the trail for the descent. The summit has a wild feel to it with the rocky ramps,
and no markings, cairns, or graffiti.
