York County Highpoint Trip Report
Date: April 16, 2006
Author: Don Desrosiers
I came at this one from the south. If you do likewise, Mountain Road is at the
first traffic light on U.S. 15 after you enter into PA. If coming from the
south, please note there is also a Mountain Road in Adams County.
You do NOT want that road.
I got slightly different driving directions from Mike Schwartz.
0.0 - From U.S. 15, turn southwest onto Mountain Road.
0.8 - Turn right onto Campground Road (note red BSA Camp Tuckahoe signs).
1.0 - Turn left onto Pine Street.
1.9 - Go straight ahead on Tuckahoe Road. Road becomes dirt.
3.3 - Reach gate just north of lake (shown on topo).
Note that for this BSA camp, red seems to be the default blazing color.
Since the camp was locked up, the dogs and I walked through the camp to the
Trading Post. Continue to the Campmaster's building and take the red blazed
trail on the right side of the building, going past the amphitheater.
At the jeep road, go right to Camp "Maple". At the "Conoy" sign, to uphill on the
red/yellow trail. This area is being developed, so conditions may change.
Continue to the top of the hill. Mike continued past the crest but the area to
the southeast is being logged (developed?), so I turned left (northeast) on a
red trail just prior to the crest. After about 200 yards, turn right onto a
jeep road (I think the left goes to the lake but did not follow it). After 75
yards, turn left onto another jeep road, steeply up the hill. Follow your nose
to the highest point which I felt was in the woods about 50 yards off of the
jeep road. I built a small cairn.
Based on field evidence, you may want to avoid this one during hunting season.
During the summer, you will need to obtain permission from the BSA camp.
Maybe one hour round-trip but we didn't push it.
