The lists that follow are intended as a rough guide to points that are "easily" accessible from an Interstate. By that we mean that the point (or points) in question may be reached from an Interstate in some short amount of time, arbitrarily defined as roughly 20 minutes. If the county has multiple points, there must be some reasonable expectation that you can either get to all or a substantial number of them in the time allotted. The exact definitions of "reasonable" and "substantial" are left as an exercise for the reader.
The choice of sticking to Interstates rather than expanding to U.S. routes was deliberate: there is more or less uniformity with Interstates. The same cannot be said for U.S. highways. For example, there is a considerable difference between U.S. 127 in Michigan (practically an Interstate) and U.S. 191 in Arizona (which winds just about as much as it progresses.)
Where I could figure it out, the time to accomplish the county was included. Hopefully, more times will be filled in as they are obtained. Some figures are obvious guesses. All entries presume visiting ONLY that county. While we all know that there may be other candidate counties in the area, these were NOT considered in the equation. For counties where landowner permission must/should be obtained, the time to get permission was NOT factored into the equation. Some people schmooze faster than others and some landowners are more open to schmoozing. Entry fees and tolls were defined as economic schmoozing. For counties where advance permission was required (e.g. Barnstable Co MA or Cumberland Co NC), this time WAS considered. Unless noted, there was no consideration for traffic since the assumption was made that we all drive the speed limit anyway :-) and that you will always travel with proper maps. State highpoints were always given the benefit of the doubt.
Many states do not have complete trip reports, and some earlier reports are lacking in specific geographic reference. These counties were determined strictly from maps (and noted as such). Local knowledge was always given deference.
As for the "Notes" column, several common items were used.
Any additions, subtractions, or clarifications to Don D.
