Chesterfield County High Point Trip Report
Date: March, 1999
Author: Fred Lobdell
There are two large areas of 720+ elevation in the town of Highpoint, about 2 miles
west of the intersection of US 601, SC 9, and SC 151 in the center of Pageland.
The northern area takes in about 0.3 miles of highway and surrounding area.
The church and, especially, cemetery sit on high ground near the western edge
of this area, but the ground north of the highway appears a bit higher.
I also tramped over some of the ground near the radio tower on the east side of this area,
some of it almost in peoples' back yards.
The southern area is reached by turning south on the road by the church and going a bit more
than a half mile to a road going southeast. I parked along this latter road just south
of the radio tower. (This is a different tower.) I circumnavigated the fence around
the tower and also went more than a quarter mile north through a planted pine grove.
At the north end of this grove was some high ground being guarded by prickly bushes,
but I managed to get a body part (foot) on some of this area. This was about the
highest area I noted here.
This was a difficult county HP to deal with. Both areas are a bit too large to get an
overview from any one place. I did the best I could.
