Horry County Highpoint Trip Report
unnamed (120+ ft)
Date: May 17, 2007
Author: Fred Lobdell
We followed Ken Oeser's excellent directions and parked about where he and,
later, Ron Tagliapietra parked. Scaling distances from the topographic map,
it appears that the small "summit" contour is a hair more than 0.2 mile from the
road, say 1000 to 1100 feet. The swamp was dry as of this writing, so we
bushwhacked generally due north until we hit the water-filled ditch mentioned in
Ron's report. We found it curious that this ditch is not mentioned in Ken's report.
We were counting paces and we felt that this ditch was in the
neighborhood of 750 feet, plus or minus 50 feet, from the road.
Thus, the summit contour lies north of the ditch. Brian was up for jumping the ditch but
that was beyond my abilities at my present age and we returned to the car.
We also drove west on the paved road around the right-hand bend to the dirt road
on International Paper Company land, going northeast and mentioned by Ken in his
report. The gate was open and the only sign prohibited timber cutting, so we
drove up this road about 0.3 mile to where there was another dirt road heading
back toward the area of interest. Taking this road puts one past the water-
filled ditch. But from here it was not at all clear where the HP was.
Future visitors attempting this HP should bring a GPS unit. We feel that this HP can
not be claimed without GPS confirmation of the location of the 120-foot.
contour on the ground.
