McCormick County High Point Trip Report

This peak is in Sumter NF, but requires a minor bushwhack. Continue down SC 28 south of Abbeville
to SC 81. Turn right and drive six miles to Willington. The town is apparently defunct,
and all you will find at the main intersection is some gutted brick buildings. Turn left
and then right immediately following signs toward Willington Cemetery.
You will make another left and pass a historical marker for Willington Academy before reaching
the cemetery (a small unmarked gravel road on the left - keep close track on your topo).
Within the next half mile or so, pass a road on the right and then turn right on a gravel road
near the start of a long left curve. Take this road uphill about a mile (probably less)
to a junction. The road on the left is blocked just around the corner.
You passed the HP on your left just before this intersection.
We followed the ridge from the intersection and the going was not bad (trees with minimal
underbrush but some thorny vines easily avoided). We poked around the summit area a bit
and found bricks, an ax head, metal from a plow, an animal (dog?) skull, and other ruins.
The highest spot seemed to me to be on the lip of the largest of three or four small
depressions (wells?).
Following the compass a few steps north, we could see the road, and reached it within
sight of the car. Quite an intriguing HP.
