On SC-81 in Willington, I turned southwest on James Speed Road. Call this point
mile 0.0. I then made an immediate right on Moss, following the sign to Leroys
Ferry Campground. At 0.6 mile, I turned left onto Willington Academy Drive,
following another sign to Leroys Ferry CG. At 1.2 miles I passed a small dam on
the right by which glimpses of the reservoir behind it are briefly visible
through trees. At 1.6 miles, pass Thelma Lane on the right by some residential
trailers, and Willington Cemetery Road and Holloway Drive on the left. At 2.2
miles, go right and stay on the pavement at a fork. The left fork is gravel and
is Willington Academy Drive. At 2.3 miles, make a shallow right onto FS F563A,
which is narrow gravel but suitable for any street legal vehicle. At 2.7 miles,
reach a small clearing as the road begins to traverse the right side of the HP hill.
At 2.9 miles, I parked at a junction and began the hike.
I hiked uphill toward the HP through open forest. The ground was heavily
furrowed, which I suspect may have once been an old road, long ago bermed off
and overgrown. When the "road" topped out I headed cross-country to the HP.
The area is littered with several mostly buried piles of old bricks.
A few minutes of walking around on the highest ground and I called it good.
