Pickens County Highpoint Trip Report
Sassafras Mtn (3,560 ft)
Author: Ron Tagliapietra
From Pickens, drive US 178 north beyond SC 11 almost to the state line.
At Rocky Bottom turn right (near the school for blind/deaf). Follow the
gravel road five miles to the parking area and walk up the road to the site
of the former fire tower. You will pass the Foothills Trail forks toward Table Rock
and Caesar's head as you begin your walk from the car. The trail crosses the summit,
so follow the blazes westbound to the rock outcrops with the partial view. I first
visited 7-1-89 when the tower was still up, and have been back several times since.
The gravel road crosses the Foothills Trail at about two miles in Chimneytop Gap.
You can park here and hike eastbound if you want more of a climb. The most challenging
climb is from Table Rock State Park via Pinnacle Mtn. (second highest in SC).
