Spartanburg County Highpoint Trip Report

Date: June 8, 2006
Author: Shannon Dillmore

Previous trip reports contradict each other on this one but the gist is still spot-on.

Take Blackstock Road (not Bird Mountain Road) off of US 176, then the first right. You can drive up a gravel road to the left, then park at the gate (200 yards further up). From here it's 0.9 mile to the summit (not 2).

I spoke with an elderly woman (Mrs. Jennings?) who lives at the bottom of the hill. Apparently the Trents built another home in Tennessee and haven't been back to this place in a year. The caboose and observatory are still at the top of the hill but nobody was home and the lawn was very overgrown. Mrs. Jennings also insisted that I take a thick stick to the top to fend off the bears that live in the area. I complied in the interest of politeness.

Hiking statistics: Total of 1.8 miles round trip, 250 feet of elevation gain.
