Coffee County High Point Trip Report
Dates: January 28 and March 3, 2001
Author: Ken Oeser
The northern areas can be accessed by calling Buddy at the Skymont Boy Scout Camp near Altamont, TN.
Drive northwest up the gravel road until a dirt road goes straight at a curve in the gravel road. We drove
until the road got muddy, then parked and walked another mile to get all three points. A road turns left at
the long contour, and continues past the second point, but you must walk about 100 yards uphill from
there to the third area. The westernmost of the three seemed to be the highest because it has more gain
within the contour. This could be driven in summer, but access is limited to times when there are no boy
scouts present. Please call in advance and let them know you are coming. (Contact Buford Campbell at
931-692-3435.)
The southern areas are on property leased by Sammy Anderson of Manchester. He is friendly, but does
not want anyone on the property during deer or turkey season. (Contact Sammy Anderson at 931-728-
0005.) We drove south from the Skymont Boy Scout Camp and parked at a gate on the west (right) side
of the road just before some stone towers naming a development which seems nonexistent. The road
beyond this gate is the double dotted line road heading west to the northern of the two areas, and a small
lake is crossed after about 100 yards. The road goes pretty much due west to the northern area, then
another dirt road can be followed south to the second area, just past a large ravine at the edge of the
plateau between the two points. There is some view from this southernmost area in the county. Again,
call the contact and let him know you are coming. He is very friendly and we should keep him this way.
He told me Big Butt was the highest area in Coffee county; this is just northwest of the 5 areas, and is on a
ridge off the plateau, but has one less contour than the highpoints.
