Monroe County High Point Trip Report
Haw Knob (5,472 feet)
Date: October 24, 1996
Author: Fred Lobdell
Haw Knob lies on the NC - TN state line, just off the Cherohala Skyway. This is also the boundary
between Cherokee National Forest (TN) and Nantahala National Forest (NC), hence the abominable
coined name for the skyway. When it was first opened in 1996, it was the Cheoah Skyway.
From Tellico Plains, take TN 165 toward North Carolina. At the height of land on the state line, park at
the Big Junction parking area (5,240 feet). (This point can also be easily reached from Robbinsville, NC;
see the trip report for Graham County, NC.)
The overgrown trail begins at the north end of the parking area and climbs moderately to reach the flat
summit of Haw Knob in 0.4 miles. You will need to wander around a bit to satisfy yourself that you have
reached the true summit. The topographic map shows a bench mark here, but I was unable to find one.
Return the same way.
