Haw Knob (5,472 ft)

I was short of time, and had no topos, just Fred Lobdell's trip report. Following his directions, I went to the state line at mile 0, but that is at Muddy Gap, elevation 4500 feet. Fred's trip shows less than a half mile one way, so I knew it couldn't have a 1000 feet of gain. Eventually backtracking, I found a parking area that matches his description about 4-5 miles south of the border, but it was not marked for Haw Knob. I ran out of time, and had to pass.

I think Fred's report is right, but the mileposts of the highway are different (they may have been changed, or the route changed). It looks like the knob is reached from about milepost 4 on the NC side of the Cherohala Skyway.
