Monroe County High Point Trip Report
Date: May 14, 2004

Directions from Fred Lobdell’s 1996 report are unchanged. The trouble finding
the highpoint noted in John Garner’s report is explained by a careful look at
the map. The state line touches the Cherohala Skyway at a few places but is
only noted on the ground at Muddy Gap. The Big Junction parking area is also on
the state line. It is between mile markers 6 and 7 on the North Carolina side.
The walk from the north end of the parking area is through a very overgrown path
but is still easily followed (at least this early in the season). Haw Knob is
open at the summit. I also could not find a benchmark but there is a concrete
slab which appears to have had a plaque mounted on it. I was pleasantly
surprised to find that there are nice views from the top.
