Stewart County High Point Trip Report
Date: July 8, 2000
Author: Ken Oeser
From Erin, TN go west on Highway 49 to Grays Crossing to the junction with Highway 147 south.
4 areas 1 mile east of French Hollow
Go due west from the intersection on Cane Loop Road for about 1.25 miles, then turn right onto McCarty
Road. After about 0.5 mile, a house with a field behind it is on the right. Turn right into the driveway
and ask permission to hike through the fields. The first point is directly east of their house at the county
line, and is so small it probably is not highest. (The road is higher, but is in Houston county.) Hike
downhill to the pond, then hike northwest through the field along the ridge to the woods and find an old
road heading into the woods. This road heads up to the second area, then goes downhill (northwest).
After a few hundred feet, the third area is just to the right of the road. It is pretty flat, and probably is not
the actual highpoint. The road splits a couple of times after this; avoid the downhill left split, and a right
split that follows a side ridge (use a topo!).
This road then curves left and goes uphill to the obvious 4th area.
1 area 1/2 mile west of Louis Hollow
From the highway intersection, follow Highway 49 north about 2.5 miles and turn left onto Old Highway
18. Go west on this road about 3 miles and pass Hurricane Creek Road on the left. This highpoint is on
the second ridge on the right, at the second faint left bend. This seems to be state forest land, and has
been logged in the past. A dirt road leads to the highest area at a pile of brush/logs.
1 area 3/4 mile east of Chambers Pond
About 1/4 mile north of the last area on Old Highway 18, along the road on the left and right. A gravel
driveway goes off to the left, and there is an old mailbox and a large tree. Park beside the road and walk
along both sides of the road.
