seven areas near Munford1

For the easternmost and largest area, go north on Highway 51 from its junction with Highway 206 at Crosstown. Drive northeast for a short distance and turn left on the first road, McLaughlin Road. Drive to the road crest and turn left onto South Greta Green and park somewhere along this road, which runs along the crest of the contour. Walk left onto Glencoe Cove, a short cul-de-sac, and knock at #31, the only house on the right. The highest point of this large contour seems to be just behind this house, at the side of a privacy fence. We walked south to the end of the road and up into a couple of other yards, but nothing seemed higher. Gain of this contour is probably about 4 - 5 feet.

Return to McLaughlin Road and turn left, then take the next left on unsigned Doctors Road and follow it to Highway 206. Turn right and immediately pass Covington Press on the right, then pull into a gravel lot with some trailers on it. Area number two is at the rear of this lot, and has no gain to it.

Go west on Highway 206 about 0.5 mile and park beside the road at a VFW or church just before Chance Street, then walk across Chance Street on the sidewalk, then ascend the hill to a magnolia tree in the front yard of a house. The highest point seems to be next to this tree, and there seems to be at least 6 feet of gain here, and it is the highest area of this contour.

Drive another 0.5 mile west on Highway 206 and turn left at City Hall and park at a City Park on the right. A large contour contains the park. Walk to the south end of the park at Douglas Street, then west on this road to its peak at #31, next to a tree, which is the highpoint of this contour. There seems to be only 3-4 feet of gain here.

Drive up Douglas Street, turn right on Tipton Street, then immediately left onto Crigger Street. It turns right and comes to a shopping center on the left, which now covers the contour area, which was likely leveled in construction.

Go east on Highway 206 past City Hall and then turn left onto Beaver Road, then drive north 1.2 miles and park on the left at the junction with Walker Field Road on the left. Walk north 150 feet and touch the edge of the field on the left, which is the highest area of this contour. Hand-leveling indicates this is lower than the next area 0.2 mile east. Return and walk east on Walker Field Road 0.2 mile to a left curve. This contour is pretty flat, and the area at the fence on the left seemed as high as anything within the pasture on the left.

two areas 3 miles west of Munford

Drive back south to Highway 206, turn right and follow this past the shopping center and contour area above, pass Highway 178 turnoff on the right, and go straight on Drummonds Road another 3.0 miles and turn right onto Campground Road. Drive north 0.2 mile. The higher of two areas is on the left next to a house and driveway where we gained permission to walk around. The small area across the road was hand-leveled to be lower.

two areas at Peckerwood Point

Return to Drummonds Road, turn right, and go 1.1 miles and turn left at a 4-way stop. Drive 0.2 mile south and park on the left side of the road. The highest of these two areas is on the left side, about 15 feet from the road, but has only about 1-2 feet of gain.

two areas north-northeast Dixonville1

Return to Drummonds Road, turn left, and drive 1.8 miles, then turn left at a stop sign and go 3 miles and pull into a roofing-tile covered driveway on the right (#2881), just before Bluff Road. Nobody was home, but the highest area is just behind the house. Hand-leveling from here showed the area just north of here to be lower.

1 An area with 5+ feet of gain that should thereby be visited to count the county.
