There are two hiking options for this one:
1. From Erwin drive south on Highway 23/19W for about 7 miles until the highway splits. Follow
highway 19W east and cross the NC border after 4 - 4.5 miles. About 1 mile later is a parking lot for the
Appalachian Trail. Park here and hike southwest for 6.8 miles on the AT to the top of Big Bald. There is
a very nice view from the top due to lack of trees and shrubs.
2. From Erwin drive south on Highway 23 for 14 miles to the NC border at the Appalachian Trail
crossing. Hike northeast on the AT for 5.8 miles to the summit of Big Bald.
There are many condos or cabins just on the NC side of the summit, and there may be a very short route
accessible from this area.
