Lipscomb County Highpoint Trip Report
one area with Liberty BM (2,880+ ft)
Date: November 25, 2007
Author: John Mitchler
I used Scott Surgent’s report to get there and to prepare myself for the chill wind.
Located in the Texas panhandle, this CoHP is on flat, high plains, north of US
60 as it enters/leaves Texas into Oklahoma. From the town of Canadian TX, go
north on US 60 across the Canadian River and turn left (west) on US 83.
Go 15 miles and turn right (north) on TX 23. Drive north 2 miles until you reach
Locust Grove Road on the right (east). Park.
This area looks similar in height to the area a mile north and vice versa but I
was able to hand level the area to the south as definitely higher. Walk south
of Locust Grove Road on the west side of TX 23 and along the telephone lines,
look for the BM Liberty 1957 and its triangulation marker. They were slightly
buried and looked knocked over by mowers. The land in the field to the
southwest hand leveled higher. We (dogs and I) walked out there and hand
leveled south and that was higher. So we walked south about a quarter mile and
leveled back. The ground measures higher at the south end of this large contour area.
What do you think? There’s a nice steak & ale restaurant in Canadian.
There are a few fun things to see in town, like the River Wagon Bridge.
