San Saba County High Point Trip Report
two areas (1,980+ ft)

On an earlier trip, I drove north and east from Pontotoc on FM501 to the road junction at CR365 at which
the topo shows a road leading north to Taylor Ranch. The logical point to access the hps seemed to be the
road leading south to Bush Windmill. This road led to a house where I met Mrs. Taylor. She said the land
around the hp area had been sold to Gary Kaspreyzk. I didn't have time to contact Gary on that trip.
This time, while Dotty and I were at a nearby Elderhostel, I called Gary and also talked with his wife Elaine.
They said they would be glad to have us come out and visit the hps, and hoped we could come Saturday, the
13th, when they would be at the ranch. We said our schedule would only permit us to come on the 12th.
In that case, we were welcome to go out and walk to the hps.
The access to the property, which is named Rocking K Ranch, is off CR353 which runs southwest from
FM501 east of the Taylor Ranch. There is a nice locked gate and a road that runs west, north of an
1,879 foot hill, and north of Notch BM. The road continues to the 1980 contour where there is a house
and other buildings. The Bush Windmill is no longer there.
This made a nice walk, though we were sorry not to be able to meet Gary and Elaine. Gary said a USGS
man told him that the Notch BM was the high point on his property. There was no way to confirm this.
