Williamson County High Point Trip Report

Date: November, 1999

Drive NW of Austin on US 183; 30 miles to TX 29. Turn left for 2.4 miles to Liberty Hill. Turn left (W) on FM (that's Farm Road, which is a paved state secondary highway) 1866. Go west 6.6 miles. Turn left (S) on CR 285; a sign says "Hopewell Cem". Set odometer. At dead-end at 0.9 mi, turn right onto CR 286. At 1.7 miles, veer left (road turns into CR 287). At 3.8 miles, CR 287 veers left; go straight ahead on dirt driveway. Reach a locked gate just off road.

With permission from the owner, Mr. Bob Armstrong (you'll need to get someone to unlock the gate), drive a half-mile up the hill to the top. There is a ranch house on top of the hill. The two HP contours are on hilltops on "Post Oak Ridge". Both are privately owned, and both are accessed off the same county road.

With a laser instrument to measure grade elevations, I shot the elevation of a spot in the road where the two driveways branch off, then I measured how much higher each highpoint was than the spot in the road. The west side HP was 46 feet higher, and the east side HP (Mr. Armstrong's property) was about 54 feet higher. The actual HP is in a grove of trees just west of the house.

Normally, I might have just bagged both and not worried about it, but both owners were interested in finding who really owned the HP, and measuring for them generated some goodwill. It took a couple of hours, but it was a beautiful day, and I enjoyed visiting with them.
