Dickenson County Highpoint Trip Report
Birch Knob (3,149 ft)
Date: September 5, 2004
Author: Ken Oeser
As reported earlier, there is now an improved gravel forest road to the base of the rocks.
From Clintwood VA, go north on VA631 and 611, following the signs to Birch Knob Tower at the intersection of
VA83/VA631 in town. The name Birch Knob tells us the name of this one, which is much better than Birch
Gap as shown on the topo. There is a stairway all the way to the top of the rocks but the sides and rails
don't permit one to get to the natural highpoint. After discovering this, we backtracked a couple sets of
stairs, climbed over the side, and went up the rocks to the highpoint of 2 counties at the benchmark.
I had been here before but it was new for Annette and Alexandra.
