King William County Highpoint Trip Report
two small areas (210+ ft)
Date: November 5, 2004
Author: Fred Lobdell
These high points are two small 210-foot contours, within a large 200-foot contour.
Eastern area: From the intersection of VA 30 and county 601 in the hamlet of Calno (there is a small gas
station and convenience store at this intersection), drive south on 601 for about 0.15 mile to the road crest.
Get your vehicle as far off the road as you can and walk into the woods between two houses on the right
(west) side of the road. There is a small elongated contour, trending approximately northeast-southwest,
marking this point. We tried our best to find some higher ground but the operative word here is indistinct.
Western area: Return to VA 30 and go west about 0.3 mile to where there is a dirt road with a chain across
it on the south side of the road, as noted in Chip Clark's report. This is pretty much due north of the HP.
Park here. We walked up the dirt road for a short distance but it soon took a bend to the southwest.
From the bend, we bushwhacked due south through the 25-foot tall piney second growth until we came to a small
area that rose a couple of feet above the surrounding terrain. This area was at about the right distance from
the road and we could see no higher ground. We took a slightly different return route, angling more toward
the dirt road, but still saw nothing higher than where we had been.
A GPS unit would prove very helpful here.
