Rockbridge County High Point Trip Report
Rocky Mountain (4,072 ft)
Date: March 7, 1999
Author: Fred Lobdell
Besides being Rockbridge County's highest point, Rocky Mountain may well also be the highest point in
Amherst County.
From where US 60 passes under the Blue Ridge Parkway, drive east on 60 about 4 miles to Coffeytown
Road (county 634). Turn right (northeast) on Coffeytown Rd. and follow it for about 4 miles until it
becomes Forest Service Road 63. Continue on this road for another 2 miles as it rises to Salt Log Gap.
Turn left here and go about 1 mile to an intersection. The road ahead becomes rougher; a high-clearance
vehicle may continue to the radio towers atop Rocky Mountain, but a passenger car should turn right and
find a place to park.
Hike (or drive) up the road to the radio towers, which are about 0.75 miles further. The towers are fenced,
but the high point is on top of a rocky outcrop near the eastern towers.
