Rutland County Highpoint Trip Report
Killington Pk
Date: September 11, 2004
Author: Brennan Connelly
Approach: From US4 between Killington and Mendon, head south on Wheelerville Road for 4 miles to
trailhead on left side of road for the Bucklin Trail.
Hike: This is a nice and easy hike that avoids the crowds of tourists on the gondola and, anyhow,
the gondola is tantamount to cheating and causes one to miss an enjoyable hike. Follow the Bucklin Trail for
3.4 miles to its junction with the Long Trail. Take the Long Trail south for 0.4 mile to the refuge cabin,
then bear left on the Killington spur for a steep and rocky 0.1 mile to the airy summit.
The summit is quite pretty if you face west and away from the communications array and the
eyesore of a fire tower.
Hike statistics: 7.2 miles round-trip, with 2,500 feet of elevation gain.
