Windsor County High Point Trip Report
Gillespie Pk (3,366 ft)
Date: July 1, 1999
Author: Ron Tagliapietra
This lesser known forested summit offers a nice sample of the famous Long Trail and of a typical peak in
the Green Mountains (they didn't get named for the few alpine ones!). From Rutland, drive 16 miles
north on US 7 to Brandon, then drive east on VT 73 to Brandon Gap. Park in the lot for the Long Trail.
Hike northbound about 2.7 miles to the sign at the summit for a total gain of 1180 ft. The first half mile
is the steepest to the signed junction with the Great Cliff Overlook (reputedly worthwhile but check signs
at junction for seasonal closures for bird habitat). In the next mile you will cross 2 or 3 summits in quick
succession including Mt. Horrid and Cape Lookoff Mountain. Then you will begin a more substantial
descent of 300 feet in the space of 0.8 miles. When you bottom out, you will begin the final ascent of 340
feet in 0.6 miles to the summit (and crossing into Windsor Co. from Addison Co. in the process). Those
who wish to continue will find shelters in a couple miles, and for one way trips, the summit is 6 miles
south of VT 125 at Middlebury Gap.
