Island County Highpoint Trip Report
five contours (580+ feet)
Date: September 5, 2007
Author: Adam Helman
Note: This effort was part of a larger journey
collecting county highpoints in early September 2007.
Conditions have changed owing to more housing in and around the relevant contours -
- The large, southernmost contour is now bisected by a new road running
north-south, I believe called "Windsun Road" or something quite similar.
Unfortunately there are houses with "No trespassing" signs along its length.
Windsun Road is parallel to Sequoia Road and several hundred feet east thereof.
- There is now a tall communications tower located on the property immediately northwest of
this road junction.
The resident is a reclusive man who refused access
to the higher ground located in the woods north and west of his disheveled property.
To enter this wooded area, return to Cross-Island, and walk to the mobile home some
100-200 yards west of the cited junction, on the street's north side. The mobile home
is festooned with antiques; and access is easy to the wooded area via this
"back-end" approach.
This wooded area does not correspond to any of the three small,
central contours of interest, lying to the south-southwest of the westernmost of
these three contours. However both the man noted above, and a resident northeast of the
cited road junction, claimed that the communications
tower lies on Camano Island's highest ground. However it was obvious that the woods to its
immediate north and west was some 5-10 feet higher still.
The westernmost contour now has a home on it, and presumably this area has been leveled
to enable its construction.
- The northernmost contour was visited last. A home lies near the northwestern perimeter,
with road access via a private driveway leading south from the east-west road
immediately north of the contour. From the home (with the residents absent),
I parked and then bushwhacked east-southeast until satisfied that
all visible ground lied lower.
Despite warm, dry weather, I wore raingear to prevent ripping my less durable hiking clothing.
My hands stung throughout the day and into the evening.
